Think Big

The only way out of the multiple crises facing our planet today is to think as big as possible.

There is a real crisis of imagination today. As Mark Fisher wrote in Capitalist Realism, “It is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism.” We could say the same about any number of related planetary crises, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pandemics, environmental destruction, and brutal forms of global warfare.

We have to avoid the “deer in the headlights'“ freeze response. For people who are aware and attuned, this is a frightening time. A freeze response would be a natural, even understandable, reaction. But it is critical to work through the fear and find a way to get to solutions.

Every day, I try to ask myself, “What kind of positive impact can I have through my work?” And then I try to think bigger than the ideas I had yesterday.

I ask, “What kind of world is possible?” And then I try to think bigger than the possibilities I thought were possible yesterday.

“Think Big” is a mantra and a spell that can help us in these times.
