Finding purpose in the Anthropocene
A better world is possible.
All of us alive right now had the fortune of being born in the Anthropocene, an epoch defined by the profound impact of human activities on Earth's ecological and planetary systems. Unfortunately, human impacts on the planet have been chaotic, damaging, and destructive—both to those alive today and to future generations. The Anthropocene is now marked by overlapping systemic crises, including the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, grave human rights violations, and a powerless international system that cannot prevent great-power war. Governments are now openly struggling to devise and implement plans to combat these issues.
It does not have to be this way.
We have it within ourselves to imagine a different kind of Anthropocene—a period of human history in which peoples from all over the world work together towards a shared purpose in defending human dignity and maintaining balance with planetary systems.
How can we each contribute to a better world?
Amidst the turmoil, it is crucial for each of us to reflect on our purpose and how we can contribute positively to the world.
Tackling the monumental challenges of the Anthropocene requires the collective effort of good-hearted, thinking people. I believe that each of us alive today has a unique set of talents, skills, experiences, and passions that can be harnessed to make a meaningful difference to the crises that we collectively face. Collaborating across disciplines and borders, we can build resilience and work toward a more equitable, just, and sustainable world.
As you consider your role in the Anthropocene, take a moment to reflect on these questions:
What are your passions, and how might they contribute to a better world?
How can you use your skills and talents to address the challenges of the Anthropocene?
In what ways can you collaborate with others to create innovative solutions for the crises we face?
How can you promote human dignity and justice, personally and professionally?
By asking ourselves these questions and seeking answers, we can start to identify our purpose in these challenging times. As individuals, we have the power to make a difference, whether it be through activism, education, or innovation.
We can avert a flawed destiny. We have it within us to create a brighter, more sustainable future.
